Architectural Design 1
PROJECT 1 : Geometry and Form : Architectural Design Elements & Principles
This ice breaking project introduced a basic understanding on the principles, design elements, processes as well as approaches in developing ideas and design, and creating 2D and 3D forms represented as tattoo stamps and models
The purpose of this project was to allow students to tap into their creative side by exploring and producing abstract ideas and to express and translate them using the design principles which are axis, symmetry, hierarchy, datum, rhythm and repetition.
We were tasked to create a total of 4 models by choosing one design principle to work with (axis, symmetry, hierarchy, datum, rhythm, repetition) and representing them using the primary primary elements which were point, line, plane. Then, we had to create tattoo stamps of the models.
My experience
The journey of completing this task was not the easiest due to it being my first time creating architectural models, hence I was unsure of how to do so and with what suitable approach to take. Initially I had also struggled with understanding the concept and what was required, but I was able to grasp it a little with the help of my tutor and through some research. Furthermore throughout the task I had to often let my tutor check my progress which she provided me guidance and advised me to make changes to improve my quality of work every time. I was not used to this process and to be able to constantly develop ideas at first, I had also faced difficulties with time management while doing so. However upon completing this task, I feel that I've developed a proper understanding not only on design principles, but to also fully understand what I was getting myself into and what the future assignments will look like. I also develop an understanding how materials used to make the architectural models and how to shape them as well as finding ways to develop ideas and ways to manage my time. Overall, despite this task was just the beginning of my architecture journey in Taylors, this was a steep learning curve for me as I hope that I will improve and excel in future works and I will constantly try my best to do so.
PROJECT 2 :
Structure & Body: Materials, Anthropometric and Ergonomic Exploration- 1:1 Bamboo Activity Structure
About the project
This project introduces the concepts of anthropometry and ergonomics, the basic understanding of a structure, understanding material and its qualities as well as the human scale.
This was carried out through the creation of a 1:1 structure with the main material being bamboo. The structure was to be for the use of individuals of the Kelab Kebun Komuniti Anak Istimewa P3KU and was to be within 15 m3. A 15 minutes of verbal presentation with a video recording and a presentation board was to be then created. We were given a time limit of almost a month to complete these tasks.
My experience
The project started off with relating the idea of the how the human body relates to space , developing a further understanding of scale and proportion in relationship with body and space and deciding the purpose of the space to be created.
We then worked closely with various people like tutors, professionals from the psychology area and the individuals from the P3KU site itself to understand the needs of the user and form interpretations from them. A series of scaled test models were created with a trial and error to see which one suited the best. We were also taught on how to handle the bamboo material and use it in construction.
With the arrival of the bamboo, we started making the 1:1 structure in a designated area in the university before setting it up in the actual site.
The journey in finishing the task was a rather tough one as my team lacked communication and efficiency which was crucial in group work. There were many miscommunications and few members who had very different mindsets. But nonetheless, I am grateful to all of my members as I have learnt a lot about the importance of team work, communication and how to work on it. I have also learnt much about the presentation layout.
The journey
Bits and pieces from my journey in this task.
PROJECT 3 : Space and Sensory: Self-Exploration through Spaces [Sensory Space]

About the project
The final project incorporates sensory attributes into structure, materiality, anthropometrics and ergonomics which will be translated into an architectural journey of path-portal-place. I was tasked to create a space for the self while incorporating these guidelines. I was to work with limited materials such as balsa wood, modelling board, grey board which after were to represent construction materials such as timber, steel, concrete and glass. Afterwards I had to create a presentation board for the space and to present my work in front of external evaluators. The board required me to do drawings such as the views of our model (such as front elevation, side elevations and plan), axonometric drawings of our structure, an architectural abstract drawing and several tattoo stamps depicting how the space will be used and the transformation from project 1 to the current.
My experience
I worked closely with my tutors to produce the final design through receiving their feedbacks and suggestions and incorporating them into my work. It was a meaningful learning experience as I managed to develop a further understanding on the concept of 'self and space' while getting a hands on experience. However the main obstacle that i faced throughout the journey was time. Personally I felt that there was not enough time given and I had struggled to manage my time properly due to constantly being stuck on developing new ideas.
I had to also struggle as I did not have good craftsmanship and experience on creating a model. Nonetheless, I am extremely grateful to have attempted and completed this task with the help of my tutors and external evaluators who all guided me with patience and care. Personally I also do feel that I have grown and learned lots of valueble skills and lessons that will carry me forward into the future semesters and in my daily life.

OVERALL PERSPECTIVE OF THE MODULE
The lectures and tutorials were delivered through a face to face mode which I enjoyed and appreciated. Lectures were also sometimes conducted through an online basis which allowed a more flexible time arrangement for me. Tutorials and assessments were submitted through the Taylor's applications which allowed me to submit the work quickly and compile it properly as compared to a face to face submission. My tutors and module coordinators ensured that I was properly guided and provided assistance when needed which I am fully grateful for. Overall I had a pleasant learning experience throughout the module and gained much knowledge.
